Group Activity 2 - Ramandeep K, Kelvin T, Ethan Pazmino,

"Rise Against Hunger"

  • Location: Newark, New jersey
  • Audience: Community within Newark
  • Ending food insecurity and providing food for the unfortunate.

Content and Action:
In order to effectively end hunger in Newark, it would be important to work together with organizations that already have experience and resources, such as the World Food Program (WFP), Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ), and Rutgers Against Hunger. These organizations have the knowledge, networks, and tools to help make a real difference. Since Newark has a large and diverse population, trying to address hunger all at once could be overwhelming. A more practical approach would be to break the city down into smaller sections, focusing on one neighborhood or town at a time. This way, we can make sure resources reach the people who need them most, monitor progress, and adjust our efforts as we go along, instead of spreading ourselves too thin. Working step by step, and with the help of these organizations, we could make a stronger and more lasting impact on reducing hunger in Newark.

- The World Food Program (WFP). The World Food Program helps people who don’t have enough food by providing meals in emergencies and teaching communities how to grow food. The World Food Program (WFP) was created in 1961 by the UN and FAO to provide emergency food aid. After being successful, it became a functioning organization in 1965 that fights hunger and improves food security for those in need. College students can get involved through internships, fundraising, awareness campaigns, or projects like the #ZeroHunger Challenge.(website)

- Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH) is a university wide program at Rutgers that works to fight hunger across New Jersey. It brings together the resources of the university students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the public to raise awareness about food insecurity, provide immediate help through food drives, and support research on improving food access and nutrition. Founded during the Great Recession, RAH was created to respond to the growing number of people struggling to get enough food. RAH partners with food banks, pantries, and social service organizations to deliver direct help, and it also focuses on helping students through Rutgers Student Food Pantries and programs like No More Hungry Knights Café, which provide free meals and fresh food to students and local community members.
