Introduction post - Jayson Paulino

Hi, Jayson Paulino and yes my first name is actually spelled like that I am a senior that is majoring in psychology. Now all though I don’t consider myself an activist I do respect any and all who are because I know it is not easy to do so. A few of my ambitions is becoming a therapist which is my dream job, an being there whenever I can for not only my family but also my close friends because growing I always wanted to do something fulfilling and helpful for others while being able to earn a living. I have no artistic background but I have taken a small amount of classes about graphic design and computer art programs, and photoshopping. I hope we could all get along and have a great time.

Understanding Patriarchy by Bell Hooks Quotes and Response

“The word “patriarchy” just is not a part of their normal everyday thought or speech. Men who have heard and know the word usually associate it with women’s liberation, with feminism, and therefore dismiss it as irrelevant to their own experiences”
Short Response: In my personal experience I don’t see or hear anybody use the word patriarchy anymore not unless there is a very specific conversation going on that usually doesn’t have much to do with me, this quote pretty much defines my and my friends experiences with the word or lack there off

“My brother was taught that his value would be determined by his will to do violence (albeit in appropriate settings). He was taught that for a boy, enjoying violence was a good thing (albeit in appropriate settings). He was taught that a boy should not express feelings”
Short Response: Growing up this was similar to what I was taught, I was always told to protect my family even if it means having to get into a fist fight if I have to, I wasn’t taught to love violence but that I should affectively always be ready to fight when needed, but the one thing that was always present in my life was tough love, I was always told that I shouldn’t cry over small things while I was a child.

What Memes Owe to Art History Quotes and short responses

“Memes are essentially 100 years of text art boiled down into your feed,” said professor Darren Wershler, research chair at Concordia University, who argues that memes are a type of “everyday Conceptualism.” Through an ironic and playful treatment of a fragmented subject, memes break down high and low culture, disrupting ideas of authenticity and originality.”
Short response: I’ve seen a lot of memes whether it be stumbling upon them myself on the internet and various social platforms and friends / family sending them to me and I agree with this quote considering it would describe how I feel defines a meme as they usually taking an existing concept and make a joke out of it sometimes their funny and sometimes their outright offensive and sometimes their strangely informative.

What memes expose today matches the guerrilla-style insurrection of their delivery. From the surprise attack delivery of the iconic Rickroll a decade ago, to curators tapping today’s online activists to put on the next ground-breaking exhibition, meme culture has its own (accelerated) history”
Short Response: Meme’s have evolved as a kid they would be a simple image with some funny text that would be humorous or thought provoking while also being comedic but now modern memes can sometimes be…… elaborate or less comedic and more offensive if anything, of course there are some that are still comedic but they definitely have changed for both the better and worse.

Memes Are Our Generation’s Protest Art by Sage Lazzaro quotes and shorts responses

“But today, a new medium of protest art is reigning: memes. Simple to make and simpler to distribute, they can communicate a stance or message at a glance and express the same feelings experts say are behind conventional protest art. There’s even an emerging genre within the landscape experts are calling “activist memes”
Short response: Now that I think about it memes I have noticed more politicians and companies using memes on social media platforms like X / Twitter, and instagram to promote things rather then lengthy videos or commercials. The cost affective method that would reach more so what says activist can’t do the same? Being able to spread the word of what they stand for in a quick cost effective method that would resonate more with the current generation considering most people are on their phones majority of the time.

“The media [of protest art] have changed somewhat, but the purposes are similar: the blaming of villains, the identification of victims, as well as outrage at the villains and compassion for those victims,” Jasper told VICE. In this case, the targets are Trump and his inner circle, including everyone from Fox News to his wife and press secretaries.”
Short response: I am not one for politics but that doesn’t mean I don’t follow the events that happen in the world because as the times when i do choose to go on a social media platform I’m usually bombarded with memes and short clips of elections around presidential debates for example I remember seeing memes of how Donald Trump raised his fist after he got shot, some were to glorify him and others were to make fun of his circumstances.
