SELF INTRODUCTION POST-Milene Tapuy

Hi, I'm Milene. I'm a sophomore at NJCU, studying Criminal Justice. I wouldn't call myself an activist, but certain things and issues are worth standing up for. Some of my ambitions include trying new food places, visiting amusement parks, and hosting dinners with family and friends. I am currently working at a daycare, where I'm constantly inspired by the creativity and imagination of the children, which is truly enjoyable. I took two years of art in high school. At first, it was just for the credit, but it quickly turned into something I genuinely enjoy learning about and painting.

Understanding Patriarchy by Bell Hooks

Quotes: "To indoctrinate boys into the rules of patriarchy, we force them to feel pain and to deny their feelings."

Short response: Patriarchy doesn't just hurt women, it also harms boys and men. From a young age, boys are taught that showing feelings like being sad or being kind is not manly, that they should hide their emotions. Patriarchy is not helping men; it forces them to not show their emotions just to fit in or be accepted.

Quotes: "To end male pain, to respond effectively to male crisis, we have to name the problem. We have to both acknowledge that the problem is patriarchy and work to end patriarchy."

Short response: This shows how important it is to speak clearly and honestly about patriarchy and to name it as the root of many social and emotional problems. Many men feel hurt and lose, but don't know why. Healing is not going back to old ideas of what it means to be a man. Both men and women need to work together to create a healthier, more equal world.

What Memes owe to Art History

Quote: "Memes break down high and low culture, disrupting ideas of authenticity and originality."

Short response: Memes mix fancy, important culture with everyday things like jokes or trends. This changes how people see what's real or original. Sometimes, this can be bad because it can make it hard to tell what's true or fake, and wrong ideas can spread fast.

Quote: "Memes aren't an innocent process-they carry serious political weight, and not always of the activist variety"

Short response: This shows that memes can spread powerful and sometimes harmful messages, not just jokes. They can have real power, especially when used in politics or by harmful groups. It is important to think about who is making the meme and what message it's sending.

Memes Are Our Generation's Protest Art

Quotes: "Memes help to articulate specific points, amplify ideas, and intensify emotions."

Short response: Memes are not just funny videos; they're powerful tools that help people share feelings, understand complicated ideas fast, and feel less alone.

Quotes: "Memes can spread far more quickly than the songs or art projects of previous generations, and there’s such a low barrier to entry that anyone can make them; they can go viral in a matter of minutes."

Short response: Memes can spread much faster than traditional art and music because they're easier for anyone to create and share. This makes them go viral within minutes, making a powerful way to quickly way to quickly reach and influence large audiences. However, this can cause misinformation or harmful content.
