Part 1:
Activism in my community is like the animal shelter that we have that accepts volunteers and helps animals and strays find a good home. Bergen animal shelter.
The town being on the news for not putting the flag down halfway for Charlie Kirk’s death, New Jersey did it even though the president wanted everyone to do it.
There was an anti Israel protest in Bergen when tensions were high about the genocide happening in Palestine.
Part 2:
From the readings:
According to the Center for Artistic Activism, “artistic activism is activism that doesn’t look like activism and art that doesn’t look like art.”. They also emphasize that “the ability of artistic activism to surprise us … provides an opportunity to disrupt people’s preconceived notions … and remap cognitive patterns.” In their framing, art and activism are combined: creativity moves us emotionally; activism provides strategy and direction.
From “An Introduction to Activist Art” by Stefanie Graf, activist art is framed as art that “refuses passivity” and “blurs the boundary between artist and viewer,” inviting audiences into action or reflection.
Art activism:
Art activism is a practice that mixes art and design with social change. It uses visual, performative, or media to help get a message pushed to the forefront.
Artwork Research:
Love Is in the Air by Banksy is a graffiti artwork showing a masked protester about to throw a bouquet of flowers instead of a weapon. It was made in 2003 near Bethlehem, it uses peaceful imagery to challenge violence and protest methods. The artwork is a form of art activism because it promotes non-violence and raises awareness about political conflict, especially in the West Bank. By placing the piece in a public space, Banksy makes a bold, accessible statement about peace and resistance.
