Intervention

The poster I am going to present is named, "Generosity V.S. Corporate Greed". This poster consists of a lively blue building that is generous and caring to the people, which represents the game company, Steam. The other buildings and the buildings from the background represent the other innocent buildings, like small businesses, houses, and other stores. The two buildings that represent the most evil and cruel companies, which are Nintendo and Disney, colored in a grayscale to represent how greedy they are, how they don't care about the people, and how lifeless they really are. My poster is inspired by Amy Sherald's "The Lesson of Falling Leaves". I was inspired by her use of colors of having a monotone background and the way she uses the grayscale color. The way she used grayscale is in a positive tone, which it express timelessness and to evoke a daguerreotype, which is a photograph taken by an early photographic process. I, on the other hand, use grayscale in a negative tone to express the negativity of the companies that are very greedy, to show how lifeless, soulless, cruel, uncaring, and very greedy they are towards us people, customers, and consumers alike. This poster highlights the negative feedback to Disney and Nintendo for this business practices.  At the same time, the poster gives a thumbs-up to Steam for their focus on customer satisfaction.

I decided to post my poster image in X/Twitter to reach out to a wider audience and generate a discussion and feedback on the topic.

Issue and Message

The issue on what I am addressing about is Corporate Greed. Some companies, like Disney and Nintendo, are greedy, because they focus on the money for a higher NET worth, instead on focusing onto the people, customers, and consumers. Corporate Greed is when a company or business prioritizes on profits and financial gain, above all else in a way that harms employees, consumers, and the environment. The message I am representing in this poster on how some companies favor profit over people's satisfaction.

Disney

Disney is one of those companies that falls into the category of Corporate Greed. Disney is greedy, because Disney only cared about what makes the most money and they don't care about the people, story, nor the work conditions. Disney was criticized for the safety concerns. At October 11, 2024, it was reported that Disney refused to let workers go home early as Hurricane Milton approached. The workers told that their bosses refused to cancel their work, even when the weather conditions deteriorated on Wednesday. Disney was also criticized of their increase of prices for theme park tickets, annual passes, and streaming services on Disney Plus. Disney hiked their prices for tickets from $18 to $224. The annual passes have increased up to $1,899, which it was originally $150. The streaming services have been increased too, which the monthly plans, with ads, went from $9.99 to $11.99 per month, the ones without any ads went from $15.99 to $18.99 per month, and the annually plans went from $159.99 to $189.99 per year. Disney was also criticized for the low wages and the poor working conditions for their theme park workers. It was reported that the workers from Disney Land and Disney World were underpaid, despite the working conditions. It was said that 73% of the workers face economic hardships because they were underpaid from a living wage, 60% of the cast members are paid less than $12 an hour, and 8,000 employees are paid only $10 an hour. Disney had some poor working conditions that could cause people some health and safety problems. In 2007, China Labor Watch reported about the brutal conditions on Chinese factories making consumer goods for Disney, which it was found that they have underage workers, excessive overtime, unsafe conditions, and sexual harassment. There were two reports about Disney from 2012 and 2018, and there were reports of poor working conditions, that it includes risk of fire and risks from exposures to chemicals.

Nintendo

Nintendo is the second company that also falls into the category of corporate greed. Nintendo falls into this category, because Nintendo, nowadays, bumps up the prices of games and consoles to exploit people. There's criticisms about Nintendo's plan for the Switch 2 on how they made the price more expensive than the Switch 1, and criticism on the cost for each of the games for the Switch 2 are ridiculously high. There are also complaints from people that Nintendo has prevented people from modifying the Switch 2 from letting them play or transferring their old games to the Switch 2.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my project serves as a critique for corporate greed as a whole, and a tribute to companies that care about their customers, like Steam.
