Assignment 11/5
Chapter 3
"We need symbols, they are a way of making groups, causes, messages, and ideals less abstract, more visible, and easier to convey. But symbols are slippery: they can and will be interpreted differently by different audiences. We need to be aware of how the words we use, the images we employ, and the performances we stage will be made sense of in various contexts. Our opponent scan consciously manipulate our symbols for their own ends, and we need to operate with the assumption that they will."
Short Response: From what it means, they say that symbols, images and performances could be misinterpreted sometimes and how we must be aware on the words we used, the images that we employ and the performances we stage in context.
"As any good teacher can attest, rote learning lasts only about as long as the next test. If you want your students to remember the lesson, and to integrate it into their lives, they need to puzzle through it, process it, and make it their own."
Short Response: This quote means to teach instead of preach. This interests me, because what I think it means is to guide them by instructions and examples instead of giving them a lecture.
Chapter 4
"One of the biggest mistakes an artist can make is to fool themselves into thinking they can create outside of culture. They can expand it, turn it inside out, and refute it, but the one thing an artist cannot do is create outside of it. If they could, the products of their labors would not only be meaningless to their audience, but also to themselves."
Response: This quote interests me, because it's saying that if you make a piece of artwork and expand upon it, which doesn't have any meaning to what you are making, it will become meaningless to not only the audience, but to yourself too.
"Popular culture is fantasy stories, not literary fiction; it’s pop lyrics, not poetry readings. It’s Batman movies, home makeover shows on TV, Minecraft, Fortnite, and Call of Duty video games, People and OK magazines, and, of course, videos featuring cats doing all sorts of cute things. It’s entertainment, not art. But pop culture serves the same function as high Culture: it is a representation of society as it is or aspires to be. And like high Culture, it in turn becomes a model for how society thinks and behaves. What differentiates high Culture from popular culture mainly comes down to this: pop culture is popular."
Response: This quote takes a dive into pop culture. Pop culture is served as entertainment and it can be served the same function as High Culture, because it is a representation of society on what it is or it wishes to be.
Yoko Ono
"These very challenges helped forge the artists she would ultimately become"
Response: Despite the hard challenges she experienced, she has overcame those very challenges that help make her into the artist she became.
"Botero fascinates with his exaggerated forms. His unique style blends social criticism, humor, and sensuality in a body of work that is instantly recognizable."
Response: The blend in the art that Botero made is very interesting. The way he blends social criticism, human and sensuality in the artwork makes it something much more interesting, meaning it can allow people to open up a conversation.
Hispanic Executive
"I attribute my work ethic to them. However, it was in the mentality of striving for the best that I was also taught that success meant economic stability and mobility."
Response: While his parents taught him to strive for the best, his artwork pieces have became a success, all thanks to his parents for instilling a strong work ethic in him.
"Especially as I grew into my path as an educator, I found it equally important to share the work of my colleagues and those artists of color that inspired me with both young folks that I identified with (meaning those that looked like me) and white kids."
Response: He finds that it is important to share his work to one of his colleagues, artists that inspired him, because I believe people would find his work interesting to others, let them learn about his art work, and even inspire other people to make art pieces inspired by his work.
