PERFORMANCE ART ACTIVISM POST- Milene Tapuy

 Chapter 5: COGNITION

Quote: "To become a good storyteller, we need to teach ourselves to be really good listeners. By listening to the stories that people already tell themselves, we can bring to figure out how to fit our facts into their stories.

Short responses: This means that to communicate well and make people understand our message, we first need to understand them. We have to listen to what they believe, how they feel, and what is important to them before trying to change their minds. When we listen first, it becomes easier to connect and share our ideas in a way they can relate to.

Quote: "By telling stories, people are open to hearing and understanding how we can fit our concerns into stories people already tell themself, we can get them to listen to what we have to say and look at what we want to show them."

Short responses: This means that when we tell stories that connect to what people already believe or care about, they are more willing to listen and understand our mes
sage. It helps us share our ideas in a way that feels familiar and meaningful to them.

PERFORMANCE ART ACTIVISM POST

Title: The Line

To do The Line performance, start by finding an open space like a classroom, hallway, or stage. Use tape to make a long, straight line on the floor. Then, write two signs, one that says “Safe” and another that says “Struggle,” and place them on each side of the line. Everyone begins by standing in line together. One person will act as the reader and call out different statements such as, “I can afford school supplies,” “I feel safe walking home at night,” or “My family never worries about money.” If a statement is true for someone, they take a step toward “Safe.” If it’s not true, they step toward “Struggle.” As the reader continues, people will start to spread out. Some may move forward several steps, while others fall behind. When the reader finishes, everyone stops and looks around to see where they are standing. This visual moment shows how people experience life differently because of privilege or inequality. At the end, the audience and participants can talk about how it felt to move or stay behind. The goal is to help everyone understand that not everyone starts from the same place and that these differences matter. This performance is very easy to set up; all you need is tape, paper signs, and a few people willing to join.
