Chapter 8 Ethics Quotes and short responses
Quote #1: "The dark side also understands, sometimes better than us, the power of artistic activism and history has proven this, over and over again. In fact, the most brilliant artistic activists of modern times were not working for peace and justice, or racial, gender, or sexual equality Quite the opposite: they were engaged in a struggle for racial purity, hierarchical power, and military domination."
Short response: This quote highlights an important truth: creativity itself is neutral, and the power of artistic expression can be used for either positive or harmful purposes. While we often celebrate artistic activism as a tool for justice, history shows that propaganda, manipulation, and harmful ideologies have also been advanced through highly effective creative work. Recognizing this helps us understand why responsible, ethical activism matters—because the same tools that inspire progress can also be used to mislead or oppress. It reminds us to stay critical of the messages we consume and intentional about the messages we create.
Quote #2: “The art of propaganda lies in understanding the emotional ideas of the great masses and finding, through a psychologically correct form, the way to the attention and thence to the heart of the broad masses.”
Short Response: This quote emphasizes that propaganda works not by presenting facts, but by tapping into people’s emotions. It suggests that the most effective messages are those that resonate with the feelings, fears, and hopes of large groups of people. By shaping a message in a way that speaks directly to those emotions, propaganda can influence how people think and act—often without them realizing it. Understanding this reminds us to question the messages we encounter, pay attention to our emotional reactions, and stay aware of how easily feelings can be used to guide public opinion.
Chapter 9 Quotes and Short responses
Quote #1: "Being so close to the issues we are struggling with, we often get caught up in the immediate problems we face."
Short response: This quote points out how being deeply involved in our own struggles can limit our perspective. When we’re focused on immediate problems, it becomes harder to step back, see the bigger picture, and think creatively about long-term solutions. It’s a reminder that sometimes gaining distance, emotionally or mentally, helps us understand our challenges more clearly and respond to them more effectively.
Quote #2: Our goals need to encompass our most personal fantasies and our common aspirations. They need to be sufficiently broad-reaching to guide our journeys and attractive to others so that they want to join us.
Short response: This quote highlights that effective goals must be both personally meaningful and shared by others. When our visions connect our private dreams with collective hopes, they become powerful motivators not just for us, but for the communities we’re trying to inspire. Broad, compelling goals act like a roadmap, giving direction while also drawing people in. They remind us that meaningful change happens when our individual passions align with a larger purpose that others can believe in and rally behind.
Final Project Proposal
My project will be a direct extension on my midterm. In my midterm I simply made two masks that have a piece of paper taped to the back with negative phrases on them. With that I would have others (peers, and professors) look through the mask and see the phrases through it and see the truth behind the mask. I will be doing something similar but instead of simply just making masks and using random phrases I will be making a mask with real people and real phrases. I want my final to not just get a good grade but also feel real. So I will not just be making a mask that has negative phrases on it but I will also add positive phrases that challenge the negative one.
This is to show that people experience negativity differently through each individual's words on the paper. It shows that suffering is universal regardless of who is experiencing it. The positive side shows that despite how dark things may seem there are ways to overcome and push forward. What I want is for people to acknowledge the negative side and attune with the positive side and maybe spark a change in mindset within themselves. I want people to understand that negativity is a part of life of people and that its normal to want to seek help and betterment
