Introduction Post - Jaden Bulatao

My name is Jaden Bulatao. I am a Graphic Designer major, where I make art whether on paper or on a digital computer. I am not that ambitious, but I do have some strong desires to make my stories in comics, make video games. My hobbies are making plushies of characters I like, creating sketches and artwork of my characters, playing video games, watching TV or videos I watch in my spare time, making video games, and listen to music. I always do hangout with my friends, whether it is inside one of my friend's house, inside the mall, or inside at an arcade.

Memes are our Generation's Protest Art

They’ve become a space for battling and resistance. The ability for the meme to empower and push back can be really powerful. They’re definitely sites of resistance against perceptions of abuse of power. They spread so quickly and evolve and transform, and it’s hard to shut them down in the way other forms of communicative protest can be silenced.” - Benjamin Burroughs, assistant professor of emerging media at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“The media [of protest art] have changed somewhat, but the purposes are similar: the blaming of villains, the identification of victims, as well as outrage at the villains and compassion for those victims.” - Jasper

The point of using memes is that it serves as a parody of a certain event or personality, whether it is depicted in skits, parts from the movie, or videos. Memes nowadays are used as a form of protest art or to express agreement or displeasure, while being funny and not too violent and radical. It spreads quickly, since everybody is on social media nowadays. It has an ability to influence and reach a lot of people, once it goes viral.

What Memes owe to Art History

“Memes are essentially 100 years of text art boiled down into your feed.” - Professor Darren Wershler

“Narratives matter.…Pictures don’t speak for themselves. Memes aren’t an innocent process, they carry serious political weight, and not always of the activist variety. - Professor Darren Wershler

This is true, because the meme needs to be relevant to the current state of things. The memes that I see currently, mostly deals with criticizing the current state of the government in the U.S. and the endless wars and cruelty that's happening, but some memes are not political. Sometimes they are just funny takes or reactions of authors or creators to express on what they think and how they personally feel.

Understanding Patriarchy

"The dictionary defines Patriarchy as a social organization marked by the supremacy of the father in the clan or family in both domestic and religious functions." - Bell Hooks

"You're just a little girl. When I tell you to do something, I mean for you to do it." - The Father

In our current society, we do respect our fathers and grandfathers and they always have a special place in each family. However, most families sees or treat both mothers and fathers as equals. Even male and female siblings are also treated equally. In fact, in the UK, they now allow first born female children to ascend to the throne and become queen. Unfortunately, there are still some countries that restrict women their basic rights and treat them as inferior to men.
