Self Introduction Post - Sydney

Hello, my name is Sydney. I grew up in Jersey City. I'm a traditional and digital artist, and I've been drawing since I was a child. I post my artwork on social media such as Instagram, Bluesky, and Tumblr, and I aspire to one day sell my art as an independent artist.

Understanding Patriarchy by bell hooks

“Most of us learned patriarchal attitudes in our family of origin, and they were usually taught to us by our mothers. These attitudes were reinforced in schools and religious institutions.”

Response: Unfortunately, these systemic practices continue to exist because we also follow and allow them to, whether done consciously or unconsciously. Despite how much change and progress we’ve made, various factors such as culture and race also play a huge role.

“Donning the mantle of patriarch, he gained greater respect and visibility. More women were drawn to him. He was noticed more in public spheres. His criticism of male domination ceased. And indeed he began to mouth patriarchal rhetoric, saying the kind of sexist stuff that would have appalled him in the past.”

Response: It is sad to see that, by embracing his masculinity, the unnamed man had to sacrifice his soft and gentle behavior in order to be loved and accepted by the very thing that he was so vehemently against.

What Memes Owe to Art History

“High-art purists eschew the argument, but the aesthetic and social sway of contemporary meme culture has roots deep in the pre-digital-historical canon.”

Response: This is true. The general public often gets news on topics that they would otherwise not be interested about whenever a meme shows up.

“Similarly, memes offer a highly accessible and interactive platform of production that is ripe for challenge and dissent, with disagreements and controversy only fueling the fire of a successful meme truly going viral.”

Response: As a society, seeing something that others know, which we don’t, motivates us to also look up what everyone else is talking about so that we may actively be a part of the discussion.

Memes Are Our Generation’s Protests Art

“[Memes] spread so quickly and evolve and transform, and it’s hard to shut them down in the way other forms of communicative protest can be silenced.”

Response: Memes can spread like wildfire. Depending on how popular the topic is, they can be discussed for days or even weeks, or they can fade and be forgotten over time.

“Most people interact with these images in fleeting ways as they scroll through their feeds, but creating or consuming political memes that align with one’s point of view can be therapeutic.”

Response: Because of the way our society operates in a digital world, we process and internalize information differently based on our unique views and how we initially receive them.
