Resistance Post 9/17- Jayden Battle

Memes can act as a form of resistance and advocacy by having hidden meanings in art that can seem bland. The hidden meaning can be taken in a funny way or in a serious manner. The meme that I created should have a good amount of humor behind it.

This meme is pretty straightforward, and it shows how Trump had to hide how sad he was after losing the 2020 election. In order to keep up this powerful image he had to claim that it was rigged instead of being a man and accepting defeat. This can go for many people in power, as most of them are weak-minded, sad, and insecure, but are viewed as "strong" do to status.

Memes can function as powerful tools of protest and resistance by using humor, artistic work, and symbolism to share a message. Since everything is seen online this makes it way easier to get your point across. Memes go viral every day, and all it takes is a few minutes to create one. It may seem like it's hard to find a good target audience, but it's not. Once you find people with similar opinions as you, your memes will skyrocket, and the world will hear your voice.

Patriarchy is a social system where men hold power, normally at the expense of women. Activism is the action of campaigning or using your voice to bring political or social change. Systems of power can affect what areas get funded and can shape the opportunities that we have. Due to the people in authority life can be a roller coaster, and if the wrong people have power, it can make life challenging for most people.

Quotes from chapter one
"Art allows us to say things that can’t be said, to give form to abstract feelings and ideas and present them in such ways that they can be communicated with others."-Steve & Steve, Page 25.

"Artistic activism is neither wholly art nor activism but is somewhere in between."-Steve & Steve, Page 46.
In chapter one of The Art of Activism: Your All-Purpose Guide to Making the Impossible Possible, the basics of activism is explained. It starts with a phrase that most activists are familiar with, and this is called stepping off the curb. This can be used in a metaphorical or a literal sense, in a metaphorical sense you are actively engaging in making a change. In a literal sense you are leaving the curb, or sidewalk and you're going into the street to protest. Then the morals of certain activists are used, many people have principles that they use as a tool to spread their message and to change their communities. Chapter one also speaks about how much art means in the activism world, and my first quote explains this perfectly. You can't say everything, but you can portray it in a different form, and that different form is art. Art can have hidden meanings that the common eye won't see, but you and people who have similar interest will be able to pick it up easily. I enjoyed reading chapter one, and I feel like it explained how activism works in an extremely easy way for readers to understand.
