Memes as Resistance_Ramandeep Kaur

 1. Meme as resistance post:

Memes can act like mini protest posters that spread fast online. They take big issues like patriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalism and shrink them into something funny and relatable. The articles we read showed how memes are part of a long history of art as resistance from posters to protest art, and now to Instagram feeds. They let people complain, joke, and share critiques in ways that catch attention. Even though they’re short and funny, memes open space for bigger conversations and awareness. By pointing out what’s wrong in society, they can help spark the kind of dialogue that leads to real change.

My own meme:

Patriarchy’s solution for men’s struggles: silence, stoicism, repeat

2. What is patriarchy? Below your meme post a definition of patriarchy and a definition of activism.Explain how systems of power act on our lives and rights.

The meme shows a dog sitting in the sunlight with its eyes closed. The caption reads: “Man up, they said… now I just stare at the sun.”This meme pokes fun at the idea of “man up” and toxic masculinity by showing how unrealistic and silly that expectation can be. Instead of acting tough or hiding emotions, the dog is just peacefully staring at the sun and ignoring the pressure to conform. Memes like this can be a form of resistance and advocacy because they make people question social norms in a simple, funny way. This meme challenges the idea that men have to be “tough” all the time and shows that it’s okay to ignore that pressure or deal with emotions differently. It’s an easy way for people to connect with an idea and think critically without a long lecture. Memes can also act as protest tools because they spread quickly online and reach lots of people. By using humor and relatable images, they can point out problems in society, like toxic masculinity, and start conversations. Even something as simple as a dog staring at the sun can make people reflect on unrealistic expectations and why they should change, making memes powerful tools for cultural resistance.

3. How can memes act as a form of resistance and advocacy? Post the 1 meme YOU MADE with a short description of your meme and 1-2 paragraphs explaining how memes can function as part of protest and resistance. You can use your quotes and responses to the articles in your answer.

Patriarchy is basically a system where men have most of the power and influence in society, and it affects the way people live, what’s expected of them, and even what’s considered “normal.” Activism is when people speak up or take action to challenge unfair rules or systems and fight for change. Systems like patriarchy shape our lives in ways we don’t always notice—like telling men to “man up” or making it harder for women to get the same opportunities. Activism pushes back against all of that, helping people question these unfair expectations and stand up for their rights.

4. Quotes and short response from the Chapter 1 reading.

“In order for the emotional affect of art to have political effect, art needs to be combined with activism.”

short response: This quote makes me think that art has a lot of power, but it only goes so far on its own. To really make a difference, it needs to be paired with action and activism. It’s like using creativity to not just show the world differently, but to actually change it.

"Art and activism are both about imagining the world differently and then working to make that vision real."

Short response: This quote makes me think that art and activism are connected because they both start with imagining something new. Art lets us see the world in different ways and feel things we might not notice before, while activism takes those ideas and turns them into real change. Together, they show that dreaming about a better world isn’t enough we have to act to make it real.
