“Lecture after lecture and week after week, I would diligently research the names that we’d learned hoping, praying that some of them would be the names of Black people.”
It must have been hard to follow a path where you couldn't see people from your culture follow but the fact that she did and persevered shows you what kind of an artist she is.
“I developed a system: I’d visit as many shows as possible, and I’d post one to three images from each show. I made a point of focusing on exhibitions in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York, because all those exhibitions were free to the public (and at that time I never had more than about sixty dollars in my bank account).”
I like the idea of working with what you have and building yourself up. In this quote she says that she would go to every show that was free because she couldn't afford to go to the biggest shows just yet and had to start somewhere.”
“During the first few months of my work at the Studio Museum, our numbers grew. I’d gone from fraud to peacock. I thought I knew it all. I let that cockiness gets the best of me when the Whitney Museum announced its artists list for the 2014 Whitney Biennial.”
She pretty much faked it until she made it which is what a lot of successful people say that you should do and it kind of makes sense to me. You need to believe in yourself and have that cockiness in you for you to succeed in your profession.
Frank Bowling, Greenacross I, 2009. Acrylic paint and gel on paper.
I really like the colors on this art piece and the way the designs sort of go up and down on a horizontal line. You can interpret this in many ways like maybe it's a man walking down a path surrounded by water or it can be what looks like to me as animals also. Who knows what's great about art. The artist leaves it up to the people to interpret it however their imagination takesit.
If i had a tublur it would probably be of upcoming fighters that are trying to make it into the UFC and are fighting in other organizations. It is really hard to become a UFC fighter and once you do it's even harder to become a champion. So maybe I can have a tumbler highlighting so Key up and coming fighters that have real promise to make it.
