THIS IS WHAT I KNOW ABOUT ART POST- Milene Tapuy

THIS IS WHAT I KNOW ABOUT ART POST
1. Choose 3 quotes from the book, This is What I Know About Art, and write a short response for each quote. Choose one artwork that you found either from reading the book or from Kimberly Drew's Tumblr blog (linked above) and explain why this artwork is interesting to you. Post an image of the artwork, your quotes, and responses to the blog.

Quote:

"did not want Black art to be negligible factor. did not want Black art to be exterminated. saw it happening in my art history classes, and just had to do something to build history online." (21)

Short response: Highlights the importance of protecting and uplifting Black art, particularly in areas where it’s often overlooked. It expresses a personal dedication to fighting its erasure and making sure it remains visible and recognized.

Quote: "His pieces helped me think about how could bring tenderness to my work and that didn’t have to divorce myself from my own identity." (32)

Short response: It encourages artists and anyone expressing themselves to know that they don’t have to separate who they are from what they create. It’s a powerful reminder that personal identity and emotion can make art more honest, relatable, and impactful.

Quote:

"feared that my anger would scare others. But looking back, know without doubt that have the right to be mad on these pages and out in the world." (59)

Short response: She used to worry that showing their anger would make others uncomfortable. However, she now understands that their anger is justified and they have every right to express it in everyday life.

Artwork:

This Artwork interests me because it tells a powerful human story about war, trauma, and survival. The work makes people think about how war takes away childhood and leaves lasting scars, even after the fighting is over. It also shares stories that are often hidden, giving a voice to those who have suffered. The use of cloth makes the artwork stand out and shows how simple materials can express deep emotions. Even if someone has not lived through war, the themes of loss, survival, and identity are things everyone can relate to, which helps people connect to the artwork and reflect on the world today.

2. In one last step, propose a Tumblr of your own that you would like to create to help yourself do research or share information with others.

Walls and Voices would be a Tumblr about how Donald Trump’s words and actions on immigration affected people. The blog would show both sides: the “walls” of his policies, speeches, and rules, and the “voices” of stories and experiences from immigrants. By putting these together, Tumblr would help people understand how Trump’s immigration ideas impacted real lives.
