What Is Art Activism?-Angelina Reid

Part 1: 3 examples of activism in my community

1. College Events

2. Back To School Giveaways

3. Musical Festivals

4. Food Giveaways

5. Protest (Police Brutality, women rights, LGBTQ+ rights, presidency acts, unfair treatment & ETC)

6. Graffiti images supporting justice for black young girls & women around America, speaking up against unfair treatment against all people of color, standing against police brutality

I chose these examples because these social events bring people together; It's shows the people that's against us that we stick together, we have each other's back, we support each other, & it's shows that were dedicated to help each other to succeed. These events elevates us as people of color instead of  tearing each other apart. These events are considered to be apart of activism because were fighting against discrimination, inequality treatment, stereotypes, injustice, starvation, lack of not supporting children needs for school & ETC. In Jersey City there are graffiti are representing justice for women of color all around the world! There are also graffiti art fighting against police brutality!

Part 2: What is Art Activism?

Art activism is an intentional use of all creative art practices, such as painting, photography, or writing! Expressing yourself & your ideas to others challenges social norm things, raises awareness about political issues, & inspires others to to take action & make a positive change. Examples of art activism are street graffiti, performances, visual art & ETC.

Why Artistic Activism?

"At first glance these aims seem at odds with one another. Activism moves the material world, while Art moves the heart, body and soul. In fact, however, they are complimentary. Social change doesn’t just happen, it happens because people decide to make change."

Explanation: This quote means to me that art has a strong impact. Art changes the way people see things, it changes the way people think, art gives a greater perspective & meaning to your mind, body, & soul. While activism sends the world a message.

"But as recent developments in cognitive science suggest, humans don’t think and behave this way: we make sense of our world through stories and symbols that frame the information we receive and then act accordingly. "

Explanation: Humans This quote means that humans don't react to the world based of pure logic & objective facts; they understand the world based off beautiful framework of narrative & symbols.

An Introduction To Activist Art

"The broad term ‘activist art’ encompasses a great variety of artists, art forms, and objectives. It takes many forms of expression such as performance, painting, graffiti, or installations. The goals of activist artworks can also vary widely. Works can challenge racism, sexism, authoritarian regimes, or war."

Explanation: This quote performs a broad scope of versatile art movement with unique artists and methods. Using arts such as performances, graffiti,& painting to symbolize & be a voice for social and political injustices such as racism, war, and sexism.

"Completely unembellished, he depicted the life and harsh working conditions of the lower classes. The artist’s work mirrored his political beliefs."

Explanation: This quote describes an artist picture that captures the struggles of lower class people. This picture has a realism & authentic flow about it. This artist focused on the harsh realities of working lower class men. This painting was a reflection of the own artist political beliefs.

The 25 Most Influential Works Of American Protest Art Since World War II

"There is simply no denying that it is a dark time in the world right now. There are many reasons to feel hopeless and afraid — we are experiencing, as Neshat pointed out, crises in every aspect of our 244-year-old democracy: about feminism, about human rights, about immigration, about poverty, about housing, about our health care system, about combating systemic racism, about the environment, about our very belief in what is good and right."

Explanation: This quote stands out to me because right now in the world, we are experiencing that same dark, difficult & frustrating time. Where inflation is an issue, unemployment, money, housing, school fundings, places for homeless people to live, healthcare & ETC. With the economy that were in, people have every right to feel afraid, let down, faithless, & hopeless. People still feel that same feeling to this day, because those issues are still with us. This quote is a reality for most Americans around the world.

The poster is exactly that, a sound bite, and vernacular to the core. The poster perfectly suits the American ear. It has a power. If you’ve ever stopped in front of one or turned your head for a second look, that power was at work.”

Explanation: This quote talks about the poster that spoke up for LGBTQ+ people around the world. This poster extinguish a fire inside of this community, letting them know its ok to let your voice be heard, its ok to fight for what you believe in, & most importantly; it is more than ok to be yourself. This poster influence was amazing, this taught people all around the world to have awareness about all of the epidemics that were affecting the community; not just AIDS.
