How can memes act as resistance or a form of advocacy?
Memes could act as resistance and advocacy because they spread very quickly and are related to many things that are important, but often not properly publicized. Because of how quick they spread and gain notion it’s easier to be recognized in modern day media, and they are also not long, essays or speeches and easy to comprehend.
The meme that I made was about the supposed performative male epidemic/crisis. This meme is supposed to talk about the current shift in “men”. Whether due to toxic masculinity or some form of insecurity, a lot of older generations are attacking the younger male population for acting “feminine” and for doing like hard-core work; going to war anymore.
2: definition of patriarchy: Patriarchy is a social system, where the man holds the power in the political and economic life. They are responsible for shaping societal norms, and laws that favor themselves.
definition of activism: Activism is the action to challenge or resist, societal, political, or maybe cultural norms through protest and creative expressions.
Both systems affect us because they can determine who has authority and who gets silenced. Activism pushes back on opposing things and unequal things while patriarchy quite frankly does the opposite. In times like this it’s hard to tell what the outcome will lead to in the future.
Quotes: “Artistic activism is neither wholly art nor activism, but is somewhere in between.”
“Art on the other hand, doesn’t often have such a clear target.”
Response: These quotes highlight how artistic activism is also creativity with a purpose. Unlike most art which can be either abstract or open-ended, artistic activism has a target and aims to challenge the target. At the same time, it isn’t only for activism as well. It’s still art end of itself. It just has the power to do more and reach people.
