Midterm Proposal Project - Zeyad Elshikh

Proposal For Midtemr:

Through this project, I aim to create an art intervention that connects art with social awareness, inspired by the readings and projects discussed in class.

This project is inspired by Kimberly Drew, whose work highlights how art can serve as a form of resistance, storytelling, and empowerment. Drew’s use of digital platforms like Tumblr to promote artists of color shows how accessibility and visibility can become powerful activist tools.

My goal is to design a physical object that bridges online activism and real-world engagement, encouraging viewers to see art as an entry point to collective awareness and change.

1st Idea: Memorial Boarding Passes

This project reimagines airline boarding passes as symbolic memorials for passengers who never reached their destinations. Inspired by Kimberly Drew’s focus on representation and the human side of art, the piece transforms a common travel object into a space for empathy, remembrance, and connection. It speaks to how modern systems often erase the people behind tragedies, forwarding her message that visibility is an act of activism.

Boarding passes will be distributed in public spaces and displayed

Each pass includes a short story or reflective message and a QR code linking to a Tumblr page with research, visuals, and personal reflections related to travel and memory.

Inspired by readings from The Art of Activism and Kimberly Drew’s emphasis on accessibility in art, this project invites public participation and transforms a familiar object into a medium of reflection and dialogue.

Idea 2: Story Pods (Weatherproof Panels: Vinyl-printed)

Having small interactive “story pods” at crosswalks, the installation shares short quotes and data about pedestrian safety in New Jersey. Each pod includes reflective material and QR codes linking to personal testimonies or short audio stories.

This intervention uses storytelling to humanize safety and highlight overlooked urban issues. The goal is to slow people down, physically and mentally. But also to make public spaces safer and more empathetic.

Quote 1:

"Art and activism both start with seeing the world differently and then imagining that it can be changed.”

Curatorial activism begins with that same belief that exhibitions can change how people see the world.

Curators use art to challenge systems of exclusion and imagine a more inclusive art world. Their work transforms the act of displaying art into a political and social gesture.

Quote 2:

“An activist approach to art asks us to consider: What impact does this have on people’s lives? Who benefits from its existence?”

Curatorial activism isn’t just about aesthetics it’s about purpose and consequence. By focusing on social impact, curators ensure that art has meaning beyond the gallery, making it relevant to communities.
