This is what I know about art post / Ashley Robinson

Quotes from Reading and Responses
-Kimberly Drew’s book This Is What I Know About Art is full of powerful messages. One quote that stood out to me was: “It’s absurd to think about how a $1,600 stipend changed the course of my life.” This made me think about how unfair it is that many people can’t afford to work in the arts because they don’t get paid. It also doesn’t give me much optimism as a future artist, I like the reading’s showing of reality. Another quote I liked was: “I have seen many rooms that need people just like you.” This reminded me that I belong in creative spaces, even if they weren’t made with me in mind. A third quote says, “I was really starting to feel grounded in the art world,” showing that confidence comes with time, not instantly. I love the growth that was shown throughout the book.
Artwork that I chose

Kerry James Marshall

A Portrait of the Artist As a Shadow of His Former Self
, 1980

-One artwork I found on Kimberly Drew’s Tumblr is a painting by Kerry James Marshall. His work focuses on Black subjects in everyday life, showing them in a proud and powerful way. I like his art because it tells stories that are often left out of museums and galleries. His use of color, detail, and symbolism makes you want to look closer and think deeply. I chose this one specifically because I like the eerie feeling I get when looking at it, looks like someone’s shadow grew teeth and acknowledged me by staring. I like the style of the artwork and how simple the shapes and overall picture is but it still gets the message across.
Why This Art Matters
-Marshall’s art connects with what Kimberly Drew writes about making space for Black voices and stories in the art world. His paintings feel personal and political at the same time. They make me think about history, family, and identity. I chose his work because it represents the type of art Drew wants more people to see and celebrate.
Tumblr Proposal
-If I made my own Tumblr, it would be called Intersections in Black Visual Culture. I’d use it to share art by Black artists who also explore themes like queerness and disability. It would be a mix of images, short essays, and resources. This blog would help me stay curious and share important stories that aren’t always seen in popular media.
