Draft Project Post

I want to create a performance art piece using dance through my performance.

Dance as resistance is something many people have used to feel a sense of freedom.

I want to create a demonstration of dances through a timeline, providing the oppression the population faced at the time, and end with our current times to uplift dances in latino communities.

I would like to invite the audience to join in dance as well.

I am between adding an audio with the history and music to follow along with, or have music mashedup with printed text of each dance and history around the performance area.

-Native American Ghost dance Illegal for 50 years

African american social dances

-Juba dance on the plantations

Slapping thighs shuffling feet and patting hands

Slave owners ban on drumming and keeping cultural traditions alive and retaining a sense of freedom

-Twist

-Bomba dance in puerto rico

-tango

-Vogue black and latinx queer community

-Dabke Palestinian folk dance

-traditional Mexican dance not allowed at Delaney Hall

-Reaggeaton Perreo against censorship, and conservative social values

(Bad Bunny)

Dancing preserves culture, expresses defiance and fosters community healing in the face of oppression.
