"In all honesty, I never thought that I’d write anything that would find an audience. For most of my life, I thought that the written word, especially books about art, could be written only by scholars and people with fancy doctoral degrees. The truth is: We all have the power to engage with and write about art."
I fell in love with this quote because I used to feel like my writings weren't good enough either, when writing sometimes I would come across self doubt but then I realized with enough practice & dedication; anything is possible! The main idea of this quote is that everyone has the potential to write about art, no matter their academic credentials & perseverance can lead to improvement, always.
"Art and protest will forever be bound together. And the beautiful thing about art, like activism, is that it allows us space to be curious and learn. Sharing art has helped me learn how to make my voice heard and ask better questions."
This quote taught me that art & protesting will always be an unforgettable duo. My favorite thing about art is that it gives you room to make mistakes & learn from them. There is nothing wrong with curiosity, there is nothing wrong with wanting to know more. The essential tool for activism is art, which is not just a form of expression but also used for learning. She also mentions that voicing questions about art is important as well.
"At the time, I also discovered writings by Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Negro History Week, which would later grow to become Black History Month. He wrote that “If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.” I did not want Black art to be a negligible factor. I did not want Black art to be exterminated. I saw it happening in my art history classes, and I just had to do something to build a history online.* I reached out to a few friends, and on March 2, 2011, Black Contemporary Art on Tumblr was born."
Her tumblr Black Contemporary Art, came about because she was driven to make sure black artwork gets the recognition that they deserve. By creating this Tumblr, this made sure that black artwork was never forgotten about & never neglected. This Tumblr started a huge movement & impact for black artists. Kimberly Drew & teammates were determined to be an inspiration for black artists all around the world. I love how driven, dedicated & passionate she is to keep black artwork alive!
The artwork I chose to talk about is a piece done by Jean-Michel Basquiat. This piece is called Hollywood Africans. This painting symbolizes stereotypes of African Americans in the entertainment industry. This painting also features images & text relating to the discrimination & unfair treatment of African Americans.
A tumblr that I would create to help myself do research is a tumblr about celebrities & interesting facts about them. The reason why I would create this tumblr because I feel as though it's always fun to learn weird or cool facts about the everyday celebrities that you come across. My tumblr would include their favorite weird things they like to do for fun, weird food combos they've tried before, and some of their weird movie & show obsessions. If I was ever to create this tumblr, it would be an engaging & exciting way to do research about some of my favorite celebrities. This tumblr will turn casual curiosity into a fulfilling and entertaining space for supporters all across the world.
