This Is What I Know About Art quotes:
Quote 1: "I retorted, explaining that I was upset the conversation had quickly turned into a support circle for white guilt. He looked at me and said, 'If you wanted to be in a classroom with other students of color, then you should not have enrolled in art history classes.' This professor was my art history adviser." (pg 30)
Quote 2: "When I applied to work at Creative Time, I did not know much about its history, but its mission felt like a good fit. Creative Time centers on three core values: 'Art matters, artists’ voices are important in shaping society, and public spaces are places for creative and free expression.'" (pg 32)
Quote 3: "'At the time, I also discovered writings by Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Negro History Week, which would later grow to become Black History Month. He wrote that 'If a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated.' I did not want Black art to be a negligible factor. I did not want Black art to be exterminated." (pg 20)
Short Response: One of the major goals that art has continuously performed through human history has been helping human empower themselves and their communities. Unfortunately, today, art and art discussion are being presented as inaccessible to certain communities. We can see this in Kimberly Drew's book, What I Know About Art, where she told the story of how her art history adviser that if she wanted to be in a classroom with other students of color, she shouldn't have enrolled in an art history class. This sis problematic because the adviser was implying that students of color are not interested in art, and in some capacity that people of color do not have an art history worth studying. But as said by Carter G. Woodson, "If a race has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it stands in danger of being exterminated." But as we know, people of color have a massive artistic presence with many famous black artists in the world of music and painting.
Artwork:
Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self, 1980 |
In Kimberly Drew's Tumblr, the first painting is called "Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self,, 1980" by Kerry James Marshall. The reason why I find this piece of art interesting is that at first glance, it is simple. But the painting also carries a sinister tone, which makes viewers want to investigate who the smiling man is, why he is smiling, and also look into who Kerry James Marshall is, as well as his other paintings.

Focus: Although the current presidential administration claims that the tariffs that they are implementing have the goal of uplifting the country's economy, in practice, they were nothing more than just a power move by the administration. As written by Steven Greenhouse, the Economists agree: Trump Is Wrong on Tariffs. "The tariffs, tensions, and fears of retaliation and a trade war are likely to cause many businesses to reduce their planned investments, and that, economists say, will hurt economies across the world." The tariffs bring small to no benefits while putting the country economy at risk of trade wars with the whole world, causing investors to avoid continuing with their investment in the nation. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which was used to implement the tariffs in the first place, has been widely criticized as an overreach by the administration, and several courts have deemed the tariffs illegal. Not to mention the increase in prices that consumers experience as companies pass the cost of the tariff onto consumers with higher prices.
